Jesus Sighed
“And looking up to heaven, he sighed, and saith unto him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened.” Mark 7:34

We have all sighed in life.
We sigh when we are tired, when things are not going the way we had hoped, or when we simply do not understand the “whys” of life. We sigh when we must explain the same thing repeatedly, when our motives are misunderstood, or when hope seems delayed. Author Max Lucado describes sighs as the recognition of pain that was never intended or hope deferred.
When we come to Mark 7:34 and read that Jesus sighed, we are given a glimpse into the heart of our Savior. Jesus understood the weight of living in a broken world. Humanity was never originally created to be separated from God. Sin brought sorrow, suffering, confusion, and death into what was once perfect fellowship with Him. Because of this fallen condition, humanity groans—and Jesus Himself sighed.
How many times must Jesus have sighed as He walked among people who misunderstood Him, questioned Him, rejected Him, or simply “did not get it”? Yet even in His sigh, we see His compassion. He did not turn away from human suffering. He entered into it.
Thankfully, in the sigh of Jesus lies our hope.
Had He not felt our pain, carried our sorrow, and willingly borne the cross, what hope would we have? But He did. Jesus stepped fully into our brokenness so that one day brokenness itself would end. Even now, the Lord is still at work in our lives, interceding for us and drawing us closer to Himself.
And one glorious day, there will be no more sighing.
No more sorrow.
No more pain.
No more separation.
Until then, we can rest in the comforting truth that our Savior understands every weary sigh we utter because He sighed too.
Hallelujah!
